When building or completing renovations, “waterproofing” and “bathroom” should go hand-in-hand and it’s important to waterproof a bathroom to Australian Standards. A bathroom without quality waterproofing is almost guaranteed to lead to disaster.

When waterproofing doesn’t exist or isn’t working, water can damage the building, not to mention the wet provides the perfect environment for mould and termites to thrive. That’s why it’s crucial that when renovating, or doing a general check of the home, you should check your water proofing status. Here’s what you need to know.

What Needs to be Waterproofed in a Bathroom?

This may go without saying, but if you’re just conducting your very first bathroom build and are renovating a bathroom that may be from an older home, or even installing a whole new bathroom yourself, you need to know what needs to be waterproofed in a bathroom in Sydney.

Signs You’ve Got Waterproofing Issues

There are a few key signs to look for when figuring out if you need to re-waterproof your bathroom during a bathroom renovation

Funny smells – if you’re noticing a funny smell in your bathroom, it might be time to look for mould and mildew build up. This can be caused by poor waterproofing of sink and bathtub areas. This can also be caused by poor plumbing when installing your toilet.

Apparent mould and mildew growth – Sometimes mould and mildew growth is readily visible. If you see any mould and mildew, you should wipe it clean with a bleach cleaning solution, and then if it reappears, be sure to contact a mould and mildew removal specialist.

Floor bulging – If you notice that your floor is starting to bulge in certain areas, such as near the toilet, sink or bathtub, you may have an incomplete water barrier in these areas, and may have made a mistake (or your contractor did) when installing your flooring. This has caused water to seep in under the flooring and caused the flooring to expand. Please note that this is less common with vinyl and tile flooring, so if you’re looking for waterproof options for flooring, those are two of your most reliable.

When is a Bathroom Renovation Necessary?

While it may not be your first choice due to the expense involved, there may come a time when your bathroom’s lack of waterproofing simply cannot be patched up any more. This will demand you spend some money and perform a bathroom renovation to ensure that waterproofing is installed correctly and up to the standards of various national and local building codes.

Is My Bathroom Waterproofing Renovation Up to Code?

One of the key things when conducting any bathroom renovations in Sydney is to ensure that your bathroom renovation will meet the building code guidelines. You may not be able to DIY your bathroom’s waterproofing – that will depend on your locality’s regulations. In New South Wales, waterproofing materials must be installed by a licensed waterproofing technician.

If you’re not sure how to waterproof your bathroom, it is imperative that you spend the money and get a licensed professional to perform the task for you. Keep in mind that in Australia, it’s the law that your waterproofing complies with Australian Standards AS3740 and AS4654.

This will come as no shock to homeowners, but your bathroom probably isn’t the cleanest place in the world, no matter how much you regularly clean it. If improving bathroom hygiene is high on your list of house priorities (and it should be), here are some ideas on how to go about it – and how smart technology may just hold the key to a cleaner bathroom space.

Why You Should Improve Your Home Bathroom’s Hygiene

We imagine that you do your best to keep your bathroom as clean as possible. However, there are all sorts of microscopic bacteria that you don’t see – and perhaps, therefore, don’t clean – that is growing and spreading harmful bacteria around that may cause illness.

Sometimes it’s easy to forget all of the places that bacteria can lurk, like under the toilet seat, inside drawers and cupboards where hairbrushes are often thrown unthinkingly – even taps sometimes get missed. Light switches, the toilet bowl, and other high-bacterial areas are missed by cleaning crews, or by you. But that’s OK. Luckily, smart technology may be the answer you’ve been looking for to help you gain a cleaner bathroom space.

How Smart Technology Can Help

There are numerous examples of smart technology making lives easier inside the home and out. The bathroom is also one of these areas! By making small bathroom renovations, you can cut down on the number of bacteria in your bathroom.

Here are a few ways in which smart technology can help.

Motion-Sensor/Smart Light Switches

There is an estimated 217 bacteria per square inch of any light switch! In your bathroom, this might not be the thing you think about when cleaning, but making a switch to motion-sensor lighting, or even voice-activated ones, like using a Google Home system can cut down on the propagation of bacteria as you won’t be touching the light switch anymore.

Smart Toilets

Another great option for a smart-tech bathroom renovation is installing a smart toilet! Functioning like a normal toilet, these smart toilets have a whole pile of features including motion detection (which raises the lid and flushes when no motion is detected for about 30 seconds), and a self-cleaning sequence that sprays water and soap in the bowl when closed to clean the interior of the toilet at a time you set. Smart toilets are a revolution in bathroom technology.

Use a Toothbrush Sanitiser

For those who often don’t perhaps put a cap on their toothbrush after use, you’re more likely to attract unwanted bacteria! You can utilise a toothbrush sanitiser, which delivers LED light and heat to the brush to eliminate 99% of germs. You certainly don’t have to break the bank on this bathroom renovation to make sure your mouth stays clean.

Smart Showers

We all love having a shower, don’t we? Well, smart showers are the future of showering. These devices offer a plethora of options to the lucky person who gets to shower in them every day. These include temperature set controls, hydrotherapy spray functionality, and (because it uses digital temperature controls), is more energy efficient and doesn’t waste as much water as you flip between hot and cold, trying to find the right temperature. While this bathroom renovation isn’t cheap, you’ll save money in the long run and get a perfectly temperate shower, day-in, day-out!

How Crystal Bathrooms Can Help

There are a whole bunch of home improvements you can make to your bathroom space to increase its hygiene. No matter if you decide to undertake a small or big bathroom renovation in Sydney, Crystal Bathrooms can help you make that renovation. Whether you’re taking out the old manual shower to replace it with a new one or retrofitting your toilet, we can help you make your bathroom fancier and cleaner at the same time.

Gold is the ultimate luxury colour. If you incorporate it into your bathroom renovation properly it will enhance your space. But when you’re renovating a bathroom, how do you incorporate it seamlessly without over or under-doing it? You can add touches of gold to your fixtures and fittings, flooring, tiling, décor, ceiling, and walls.

Ways You Can Incorporate Gold Into Your New Bathroom

You can lock in the gold look with a stunning floating vanity and the right lighting. Whether you opt for an all-gold look or choose accents, you can use the surrounding wall tiles to set your look off.

How dramatic a bathroom renovation do you imagine? Are you thinking white with touches of gold? Or a dramatic black and gold on equal footing? Black flooring, fixtures, and fittings can set the dramatic scene, and you can weave luxury throughout with touches of gold and a striking gold wall.

The easiest way to add pops of gold is to opt for gold fixtures and hardware – you can transform the space with these simple changes. There are plenty of options to choose from when you’re renovating a bathroom. Your taps and basins are an excellent way to capture the gold look you’re trying to create. Whether you want a rustic finish, feminine rose gold touch or drama.

You can switch out your shower head and taps for gold alternatives. Ideally, you should match these fittings to any towel railings you install. There are luxury items available, but you can also find plenty of budget-friendly options that will still make an impact.

A feature wall can transform any space. Though they aren’t often spotted in bathrooms, it is an excellent opportunity to go gold. You can opt for a gold marble tile look. Or, create a patterned tile design that combines gold with your base colour.

Flooring can also make a great statement if you opt for a gold touch beneath your feet.

Accessorising A Gold Bathroom

Gold works for most bathroom accessories, but some stand out more than others. For example, a tissue box cover and a soap dish are excellent ways to continue the gold theme. If you use liquid soap, a gold soap dispenser will work well. You can keep the theme going with toothbrush and toilet roll holders, and toilet brushes. These are excellent ways to incorporate luxurious colours on a budget. Towel rings and bars, bins, storage, and taps are also great options.

If you have a glass door, you can opt for gold trim. If you prefer a shower curtain, that’s an easy way to carry the gold theme. Your towel sets are also a slick way to bring all of the colours together.

Consider using candles to tie your theme together and add additional hints of gold to the space.

Lighting is the final piece in the gold bathroom puzzle. In addition to a ceiling light, wall and accent lights can help you solidify your theme. Lighting is available in traditional looks if you want to capture that style, or mid-century looks if you prefer a modern style.

Commercial bathrooms are supposed to be bright, open, mirrored spaces that invite guests of the establishment to use the bathroom in peace and sometimes tranquillity, depending on the skill of your interior designer. However, having issues with your bathroom as a commercial enterprise can pose a serious risk to your business and to your customers. You may need to do extensive bathroom renovation and spend money on a commercial bathroom remodel.

But why does your commercial bathroom smell so bad, and what can you do about it?

Poor Ventilation

One of the main reasons for smelly bathrooms is poor ventilation. Suppose your commercial space doesn’t have any windows in your bathrooms. In that case, you’ll likely have to resort to some sort of internal HVAC system to allow for the flow of air into and out of the bathroom. At the same time, this will help to maintain a flow of air to dissolve smelly ablutions in the space. These exhaust fans can sometimes not work at maximum capacity and therefore not ventilate your bathroom space as well as they should. If you suspect there’s an issue with your ventilation, you should call in an HVAC specialist.

Leaky Plumbing

This could be why your smelly commercial bathroom space is particularly true of older buildings. Some new owners of older spaces experience plumbing leaks that they never thought possible. It’s important to have your plumber or other staff regularly check your bathroom fixtures for leaks, as this can cause moisture and toxin build up, which can cause a funky odour.

Clogged Floor Drains

This is particularly the case in a hotel setting, particularly those with walk-in showers that rely on floor drains to drain away the water from the shower usage. These drains can become a hotbed of bacteria and toxic waste from human skin cell build up and sometimes hair build up, along with the accumulation of other dirt and grime. Make sure that your floor drains are routinely cleaned. This may require the use of a vinegar and baking soda cleaning solution.

Humidity Problems

Another often overlooked issue in commercial bathroom spaces, and particularly during bathroom renovations, is the humidity level. Now, generally, this is regulated by a heat pump or the internal ventilation system, so that the bathroom humidity levels are maintained. However, if there is an issue with these systems, this can cause the humidity levels in your bathrooms to rise, particularly in the summer months leading to the eventual growth of mould spores and the foul smell that often follows. It’s worth paying extra attention to the thermostat during the summer months and ensuring that your bathroom humidity levels are at acceptable levels.

General Lack of Quality Cleaning

One of the main reasons for poor smells in your commercial bathroom space is a general lack of quality cleaning. If you notice a poor smell persistently in your bathroom, it might be worth checking in with whatever company cleans your bathrooms to ensure they’re getting into every nook and cranny. The simplest oversight in a bathroom space can be a huge problem for your customers and business.

How Crystal Bathrooms Can Help

If you suspect that you have a plumbing issue that is causing the poor smell in your commercial bathroom, be sure to contact Crystal Bathrooms. We service commercial operations and can come to your place of business and do a thorough inspection of your bathrooms to locate the source of your odour issue. Vanity cabinets are making a sharp resurgence in home design, though they are becoming a more prominent feature than in the decades passed. They are often used as partial countertops and often have mirrors, making them ‘vanity’ cabinets.

If you’re new to bathroom renovations, you may be tempted to skip the vanity cabinet altogether, though you shouldn’t, as they are an addition that can really round out the bathroom space.

Here are some considerations to make when selecting a vanity.

Consider Those Who Use It

One of the many things that home renovations, such as those provided by Crystal Bathrooms is the capability to truly transform the living space into one that is or could be more accessible for those family members with physical disabilities.

The NDIS, or National Disability Insurance Scheme, can provide financial support for those making NDIS bathroom renovations or other home renovations concerning accessibility. If you’re crafting a new bathroom vanity, you may want to consider if anyone with a disability or elderly will be using it.

Sink Design

One of the best aspects of any vanity is the sink design. The great thing about a bathroom vanity is that it does away with the traditional standalone sink and instead integrates into floor-based cabinetry. With an NDIS bathroom renovation, you can remodel your bathroom sink to be lower in height to accommodate wheelchair access.

Turn-less Taps

You can also use NDIS bathroom modifications to allow for touchless taps, for those with mobility issues in their arms, or prosthetics that can make turning taps difficult. These electronic taps are also on a timer, meaning they conserve water and are more environmentally friendly.

Consider Cupboard Design

Another really important aspect of any vanity is the cupboards. They’re half the reason that the vanity exists! Whether you’re looking for lots of storage, or larger, less organised cupboards, Crystal Bathrooms can design your vanity cupboards to match your vision for your bathroom. Long, slender drawers, or large, box-style compartments with internal shelving – whatever your design desire, we’ve got you covered.

Motion-Sensing Lights

Another rather cool addition to your vanity, might be the addition of motion-sensor lighting around the mirror, or on the countertop. This might be useful for those with wheelchair-bound relatives or friends, who might not be able to reach for, or flick on a light switch. Again, consider utilising the funds provided by NDIS for your NDIS bathroom modification or renovation.

Double Sinks

One of the most annoying things as a couple is trying to use the bathroom sink at the same time. Though it is a rarity, it is still an annoyance. One of the things to consider when designing your vanity is the inclusion of a second sink for your significant other, or perhaps your children to use alongside you. Vanities give you the space to put a second sink in and stop the endless race to the sink at bedtime.

Aesthetic Flexibility

One of the reasons that people install vanities isn’t just for the utility, they’re also highly customisable in terms of material construction and final finish. So, if your bathroom has a more modern look, your vanity can be made of granite or marble. Whereas if your bathroom has an older, wooden look, your vanity can be made of oak or other wood and layered with a waterproofing spray.

No matter your reason for outfitting your home, Crystal Bathrooms is there to make those dreams come true. And, with funding made available by the Australian Government, your new accessible bathroom vanity is just a few steps away. Contact us today to see how we can help you!

Your bathroom is one of the most used rooms in your home, which means it likely needs a renovation before the rest of your home. Luckily, a high-quality bathroom renovation provides an excellent return on investment. The cost of bathroom renovations vary greatly based on several factors. If you want a high-end luxury bathroom, you will pay more than someone looking for a budget upgrade. Additionally, the larger the space, the more materials are required. This will also increase your costs. The key to a successful bathroom renovation is a good budget.

If there are certain components you want more than others, you need to be prepared to cut costs on those other items. It’s the most efficient way to balance your budget and still get the bathroom of your dreams. But, what do you need to build into your bathroom renovation budget? Whether you’re planning a renovation for your home or commercial bathrooms, use the advice below.

Demolition

You can’t install a new bathroom until you remove the old one and, that takes time and labour. It also costs to remove the old units and waste. Make sure you discuss this stage of renovating bathrooms with your contractor. And, if you’re planning to do it yourself, look into the cost of hiring a skip and the cost of the necessary tools to do the job safely. Additionally, asbestos might be present, and if it is, it requires a specialist to test and remove it.

Plumbing & Electrical

A licensed plumber is the only one who can handle plumbing, whether it’s removal or installation. Australian law strictly defines what can, and cannot be done by DIYers when it comes to plumbing. You can’t DIY a bathroom renovation. And, if you attempt to do it yourself it could void the warranty on your new fixtures and fittings, put your insurance at risk, and result in heavy fines. Electrical work should always be undertaken by a professional. Especially where water and moisture are prevalent. Besides, it’s the law.

Carpentry, Plastering & Waterproofing

You will need a builder or engineer if you have plans to move walls. It may require structural work, and structural work requires permits. A bathroom requires moisture resistant plaster when being prepared for renovation. Likewise, waterproofing is a legal requirement and an important step to keep your bathroom safe. It sounds easy, but it is best left to the professionals.

Tiling or Wet-wall

If you plan to tile, you need to factor in the cost of the tiles themselves and the labour required to install those tiles. A professional will ensure your tiles comply with waterproofing regulations and also do the job properly to ensure a strong aesthetic finish. Wet-wall is an easier installation job, but it should still be carried out by a professional. It is also a more affordable wet area solution versus tiles. Though, wet-wall panels are available in a wide variety of price points.

Fixtures, Fittings & Furniture

Showers, baths, and sinks require professional installation. They will likely be the largest portion of your budget as well. If you want a rain shower and a handheld unit, you can choose from a variety of options. However, you can save money on the bath if it’s less important. Or, you can opt for wet-wall panels to invest more in your shower.

Don’t forget to factor in the cost of shelving, lighting, cabinetry, and vanities. How much storage do you need? Do you prefer mobile storage options? If you’re thinking about selling your home in the next five years, you should consider how other people will look at your bathroom in Sydney. If you’re planning a bathroom renovation in Sydney, be sure to have a contingency budget in case the work uncovers deeper issues.

If you are planning your bathroom renovation, you also need to consider your bathroom heating options. It’s easy to get caught up thinking about your overall design and whether wet-wall panels or tiles are the right option for your shower. But, heating and ventilation are important, despite being often overlooked. Yes, bathroom heating is an important factor in keeping you warm, but it’s also necessary to prevent freezing pipes and prevent moisture buildup that leads to mould. Here are four of the options you may have available to you.

Heated Towel Holder

The beauty of a heated towel holder or rack is that it will keep your towels dry and toasty, and it will also keep smaller bathrooms well heated. These racks are fairly large, and if you get the positioning right in a smaller bathroom, it is more than sufficient to serve as your sole bathroom heating option. That won’t be the case for larger bathrooms and should only serve as a towel heater if you’re dealing with a larger space. When you plan placement, remember you want it handy to grab your towel as you hop out of your morning shower.

Underfloor Heating

Underfloor heating is an expensive bathroom renovation investment. But, if you’re renovating a bathroom, you may as well do it right. The benefits of underfloor heating are vast. Not only does it add value to your property, but underfloor heating can also last up to 50 years versus the eight years of a standard radiator. It’s a luxury bathroom heating option, but it will also repay you over the years. With the heat rising from the floor, it keeps your bathroom tiles warm.

A Dedicated Heat Lamp

Heat lamps are an excellent option for small spaces. As soon as you turn them on, it produces heat. With the right lamp, you can heat the air fairly quickly. These heat lamps are ceiling mounted, and the only way this would be suitable for a larger bathroom is if you mount several heat lamps. A heat lamp might also be a great option for a commercial bathroom remodel.

A Permanent Heater

If you have bigger bathroom renovations going, permanent heaters are a must. This is a consideration for commercial bathrooms, such as offices or employee bathrooms. It’s the ideal solution for larger home bathroom renovations. A permanent heating solution can be a bar heater or a radiator. You can wall-mount these and wire them with your lights for one, easy control. Radiators are suitable for use low down, but bar heaters should sit at a greater height for safety reasons.

If you are looking into NDIS bathroom renovations, then any of the above options would be suitable depending on the size of your bathroom space. Bathroom heating is important all year round to prevent mould growth, particularly during the cold winter months. Good heating and ventilation will prevent foggy mirrors, improved airflow, and of course, it will keep you warm.

When designing a bathroom renovation, your decisions will come down to two major factors. You have to consider the function, and you need to think about the aesthetics. A freestanding bath can provide a stunning focal point in a bathroom renovation. But, if you prefer showers over baths, a built-in might be a more suitable option from a functionality standpoint.

What Is A Freestanding Bath?

A freestanding bath is just that – a bath that stands on its own. You can use it stylistically as a focal point for your new look bathroom. As they don’t require any wall support, they can be placed anywhere, with the centre being the most dramatic option. They come in all shapes and sizes, as well as different materials. You can allow the overall style, and feel of your renovation to guide the bath material choice. If you have young children, pressed steel or acrylic may be more suitable. If not, an organic matte feel could be perfect. A freestanding bath is a good choice for people who love baths and take baths more often than they do showers. It is also a good choice if you have a large space to work with.

What Is A Built-In Bath

A built-in bath is perfect for people who have a smaller space to work with and tend to shower more often than take a bath. A built-in bath is built into an area that holds the bath itself, with tiling or wet wall finishing the look. It’s usually integrated with a shower. There is usually a surrounding ledge, which makes it easier for parents to bathe small children. It also makes it easy for older children to get in and out. The ledge also provides additional storage space and is easy to clean.

Pros & Cons

When dealing with bathroom renovations, there are a lot of decisions to make. To give you a better idea of which option is right for you, consider the pros and cons.

Whether your home is a new build or you’re renovating bathrooms, your bathroom needs to be adequately waterproofed. It can cost massive issues down the line if it isn’t.

What Is Bathroom Waterproofing?

Where there is a water outlet, there should be waterproofing. This stands for kitchen wet areas and laundries, but particularly in bathrooms. A membrane is applied to wet areas to ensure moisture cannot escape to other rooms in your home. Waterproofing regulations vary from state to state, but they need to be in line with Australian Standards and the Building Code of Australia. These dictate that bathroom walls are waterproofed to a height of 150mm and shower walls to a height of 1800mm. The shower floor must be fully waterproofed and steps from showers to a height of 100mm. If there is any wood flooring in the bathroom,  you must waterproof the full floor. The same is true if the bathroom is anywhere other than the ground floor.

How Is It Done?

Waterproofing is completed in stages. Some of the waterproofing will be completed before walls and floors are installed. And, some waterproofing is installed once everything is complete. A liquid sealant goes on like paint. A primer goes on first, and then the first waterproof coat is applied horizontally (left to right). The second waterproof coat is applied vertically to capture any gaps, cracks or holes missed by the first waterproof coat. The final step is a silicone sealant where fixtures and fittings meet walls.

While it’s all important, it’s particularly crucial where the floor and walls meet. If any gaps are left, water can leak in and cause massive damage. It isn’t just a risk to the structural integrity of your home. It’s also expensive.

What Can Happen If Your Bathroom Isn’t Waterproofed Properly?

If your bathroom isn’t waterproofed at all or waterproofed improperly, it can result in significant damage. When water gets into the gaps behind your walls, it can result in mould and mildew. This can loosen wall and floor tiles, leading to further damage. Improper waterproofing can also result in water damage to carpet, paint, and furnishings in the surrounding rooms. If undetected, it can result in structural damage. With structural damage already a factor, this can attract termites to do more damage.

What’s worse is, your insurance company can refuse your claim if it’s proven your bathroom was waterproofed incorrectly. The best way to avoid this is by having the professionals take care of the job. While there are DIY kits available, a professional will use the highest quality products, has the necessary knowledge and tools to do the job properly. You will also have the contractor’s warranty.

When executed properly, bathroom lighting can prepare you for the day ahead, make you feel great, and help you unwind in the evening as well. The right lights will help you set the ambience, and it’s about more than just a ceiling or wall fixture. Your bathroom lighting has many purposes to serve, and a single light won’t do the job. As much as it is about function, it’s also about design and meeting your aesthetic.

The Benefits Of Proper Bathroom Lighting

Accidents are far more likely if you can’t see where you’re going. But, there is another safety issue to consider. Where water and electricity mix, there is a greater risk. You should always use a licensed electrician to carry out work and avoid using plug-in lights anywhere near a tub or sink.

When choosing new light fixtures, opting for energy-efficient options is going to add value to your home. Potential buyers want durability and quality; the less they have to do when they move in, the better. And, opting for an energy-efficient home is a no-brainer.

To expound on the last point. Energy-efficient lighting reduces utility bills, which is great for you and also excellent news for potential buyers if you sell further down the line.

Well-located, stylish lighting fixtures improve the overall look and feel of any bathroom.

The Different Types of Bathroom Lighting

Task lighting would be the lighting around your vanity. It illuminates an area to provide you with enough light to complete a task. It should be sufficient to safely shave, style hair, and apply makeup. Task lighting could also be for a shower to provide you with enough light to do so safely.

Ambient lights are a base layer. They brighten the space to allow you to use the space safely.

Accent lights highlight elements you would like to show off – they add warmth to prevent the room from looking too sterile. For example, you may want to show off mosaic tiling or low-lighting behind a mirror.

For your vanity, there is side lighting. If you are facing your mirror, there should be a sidelight on either side of it. Locate these lights just a few inches to either side of the mirror at eye level. This will help you avoid shadows and give you the perfect space to get ready. Overhead lighting will minimise shadows, but you can achieve the same effect with a horizontal or strip light above the mirror. The key to great lighting throughout your home, but especially in the bathroom, is layering.

NDIS Bathroom Modifications For Lighting

If you are planning NDIS bathroom renovations, then there are NDIS bathroom modifications available for lighting as well. You should discuss this with your contractor to get a fuller picture, but  modifications include lower outlets, lower light switches, and key placements. For example, you may want key areas, such as the bath, shower, or sink highlighted for ease of use. NDIS bathroom modifications for lighting can also include automation.
