But, while there’s no exact formula for bathroom renovations, the fundamentals for planning, research, and design for each reno project will often be the same. It usually takes around 2 to 3 weeks from initial consultation to conceptualise bathroom designs before clients can review and sign off on plans.

When it comes to completion timeframes, the more luxurious and bespoke your bathroom renovation is, often the longer it may take before completion. A small bespoke bathroom reno might only take around 3 to 6 weeks to finalise, whereas a larger bespoke bathroom project might take over 2 months. While some home renovations must be approved before work can start on-site, others may not require a permit to be issued at all. Requirements may also vary between councils, and to confuse things even more, there are also state and federal requirements to consider as well. That being said, you generally shouldn’t need council approval for bathroom renovations in NSW, as long as they don’t involve making structural changes to your home.

For example, you must be licenced to complete any residential building work over $5000 within NSW, which includes bathroom renovations. And in order to become licenced, you must already have qualifications in carpentry, joinery, plumbing, electricity, or tiling. A certificate is also necessary for all waterproofing work, so must also be completed out by a qualified professional.

If you’re planning on taking out your entire current bathroom and replacing it with a new one, it’s going to take a lot longer than it would if you were simply replacing a shower or toilet. To start with, you’re going to have to consult with a professional. This will help you to get the design right and sign off on the plans. This process can take a couple of weeks on its own. You also need to choose a builder and get any approvals necessary for the work to be completed. Again, this can take weeks or even months.

Once the renovation works commence, it can take anywhere from a few weeks to a few months to complete the work. It is really dependent on the job and what needs to be done. Your builder will likely give you a timeframe that includes extra days or weeks just in case something goes wrong with the build – such as piping that’s in the wrong place for the new design, etc.
